Table Manners
1 Corinthians 11:17-32
August 25, 2024
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
When I first sit down to read a text of Scripture I look for what the author is telling me about the chapter. Sometimes he gives away the theme of the chapter by repetition. In chapter 11 Paul gives away the theme by repetition in v17, v20, and v33: “When you all come together.” This chapter painfully reveals that the actions of the church did not square up with the attitude of Jesus. Instead of sharing their food, the well to do gorged themselves on it. Instead of sacrificing their blessings, the wealthy shamed the poor and embarrassed them. The Lord’s Supper leads us to Jesus. Examine your attitude before you take Him in.
Sermon in a Sentence: The Lord’s Supper leads us to Jesus. Examine your attitude before you take Him in.
11:17-22: Humiliation
Private Meals and Common Meals. The well to do segregated themselves from the poor working-class people.
God is even at work in your divisions. He is sifting the faithful believers from the fake believers.
11:23-26: Proclamation
In this meal together we look back and we look forward.
The elements of the Lord’s Supper are meant to lead us to Christ.
11:27-32: Examination
Test yourself in light of Galatians 5:22ff. How are you treating others?
Like a loving mom or dad corrects their children, God corrects us here so that we will not suffer loss at the judgment.
