The Well-Pleasing Son
Mark 1:1-13
Sunday, August 20, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
If you enjoy a fast car or a fast ride at the fair you will love the Gospel of Mark. Mark records for us the fast-paced life of Jesus, the well-pleasing Son of God. Mark races passed the genealogy and the birth of Jesus, straight to His baptism and temptation. The prophets told us He was coming. John warned us to repent. God branded Him with approval. Satan could not tempt Him. A fresh start begins with Jesus.
Sermon in a Sentence: The prophets told us He was coming. John warned us to repent. God branded Him with approval. Satan could not tempt Him. A fresh start begins with Jesus.
Here are three claims about Jesus that should cause us to respond to God:
1:1-3 Jesus is the Christ the One who brings you good news!
The stress is on His unique relationship with God.
1:4-8 Jesus is the well-pleasing Son who will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
John the Baptist exemplifies the model spirit of humility.
1:9-13 Jesus has God’s power and overcomes the most difficult of temptations.
What the Israelites could not do in forty years Jesus does in forty days!
