Old Man New Man
Ephesians 4:25-32
Sunday, July 23, 2023
Dr. Kelly B. Burton
Paul’s readers in Ephesus were Gentiles who were not raised in Christian homes like many of you. They did not hear the Gospel when they were children in VBS. Paul is not suggesting they unlearn their old ways, he is commanding them to do so. There are over a dozen imperative commands in these verses today. Bogus faith ruins the effectiveness of your church. True change is what God wants to see.
Sermon in a Sentence: Bogus faith ruins the effectiveness of your church. True change is what God wants to see.
Here are four opportunities for you to use the TNT for which you prayed:
1. 4:26-27 Don’t give the devil traction, reconcile your anger before you go to bed.
Put a time limit on your anger.
2. 4:28 Work hard for a living and share with the needy in your church.
Paul is conveying the kind of work that wears you out.
3. 4:29 Choose your words wisely so that they edify others, not break their spirit.
The word for “corrupting” means rotten, and worthless.
4. 4:30-32 Don’t distress the Holy Spirit; He wants to help you.
Give Him your bitterness and He will forgive you.
