Take-Away’s from Revelation 1:9-18, The Glory of Christ
Where there is no imperative command to the readers, then we look for worthy attitudes to mimic in the human characters of the text. Sometimes we are shown sinful attitudes to avoid in the human characters. John, our brother in the faith, models the kind of attitude that every believer of all time ought to mimic. He is patiently enduring adversity. For me, this is only accomplished “in the Spirit.” In a three-fold glorious vision of the Christ, John describes his Savior from head to toe:
Vv12-15 Christ is the divine Evaluator who visits His churches
7 golden lampstands are the seven churches of all ages-
His white hair exhibits His wisdom-
A flame of fire for eyes speaks of His penetrating vision-
Burnished bronze as feet represent His strength-
His voice commands our attention-
V16 Christ is the shining Sovereign clutching seven stars
7 stars are seven pastors of seven churches-
Through their faithful preaching, the Word of God cuts away pride and self-sufficiency of the listeners-
Renowned pastor, Phillips Brooks noted three types of listeners: The Pillars of the church, The Skeptical, The Habitual, and The Sincere Seekers of Truth-
Vv17-18 A compassionate Savior with the remedy for death
This heart posture is indicative of a person ready to receive Christ-
Christ holds the keys to Death and Hades; we cannot add one thing to what He has done. He was dead, now He is alive. What work could you possibly add to that? The only work we contribute to our salvation, is the sin for which Christ died-
