Take-Away’s from Revelation 2:18-29. Too Late for Jezebel
Main Idea: Purity matters to God; don’t overestimate your power to resist sin.
In 2:18 Jesus states emphatically that He is the Son of God. We already know that, right? So, a suitable interpretive question might be, Who in the church at Thyatira needed reminded of that title? ________________. Always seek to interpret a text from the context of the original audience. What was Jesus’ purpose in 2:8? Why would that title encourage those in Smyrna?
In 2:19 the pastor emphasized a commendable attribute of some in the church. They were better than when they began the Christian life. What could be some examples of how a Christian gets better?
Who were the “sketchy church members” that the pastor mentioned in Thyatira, and what was so sketchy about them?
2:22 is complicated to say the least. It appears that God will not stand for sketchy church members to influence other members away from full allegiance to God. Influence is the key word I am stressing. We are free to eat and drink -without harming or offending others in the church. I think it is best to avoid flirting with those things that can so easily trip us all up. (Purity matters to God; don’t overestimate your power to resist sin).
2:25-29 tell us about an epic ending for overcomers. V26 describes authority over unbelievers. V28 the morning star is Jesus; see Rev. 22:16. We might interpret that as Jesus saying “I am going to give you close, imminent, eternal fellowship with Me.”
The pastor sees 2:26 ff fulfilled in the Millennium, not in heaven. Rev. 20 states that the overcomers in the Tribulation period and those who share in the first resurrection, will be priests of God who will reign with Christ for 1,000 years.
Purity matters to God; don’t overestimate your power to resist sin.
